May 2011 Newsletter
May has arrived and that means for every winefarmer in the southern hemisphere:counting the blessings in the cellar!
Bushmanspad’s vineyards this year were the opposite of last year. Almost too healthy circumstances prevailed in November and December with rain periods followed by sunshine back to back. Growth was tremendous and therefore work as well. But the canopy’s looked like from a showroom. The grapes produced were lighter this year which gave more concentrated flavours. As a result we have high expectations from our wines. From the harvest we took our best grapes to produce Malbec, Cabernet Franc,Merlot and Shiraz as well as Sauvignon Blanc. We also made a Shiraz Rose in a specific more “meaty” style and our sauvignon blanc 2011 is again gorgeous. Both will be released in June, together with our Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon 2009.
We announced before Christmas that Bushmanspad Estate came into 2011 with reaching another milestone. Bushmanspad released the “biggest blend in Robertson” called "The Menno." A true Mediterranean blend with Mourvedre,Malbec,Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. All varieties we grow on the farm and therefore a truly Estate Wine. As a reward for our efforts this first release of a 2009 harvest immediately got 4 stars in the John Platter guide. The potential of this wine is enormous so we can only expect it to get even better in the bottle, if you at least have the patience to only look at the very special and exiting label that is especially designed for this top-end wine. Bushmanspad can offer this unique wine for the value price of R120 pe bottle!
Next to this, the John Platter guide rewarded both our Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, which will be released mid 2011 and our 2010 Sauvignon Blanc with 3.5 stars. It shows that the quality of our products are on the level where we want them and we can still assure an affordable pricing. The Sauvignon Blanc 2009 was completely sold out and the 2010 has already sold well so far. We will also release for a small fan base the Cabernet franc 2009 by early June to follow up on our much appreciated Cab Franc 07.
In the new line up we will concentrate on these 4 varieties mentioned for our local market and overseas while we will continue the Red Gold range for the Chinese market where we gained some successes and secured a nationwide distributor. This thanks to the success we had on the Hong Kong and the Guangzhou wine shows in 2008 where Bushmanspad was awarded.
Owner Menno Schaafsma is exited about the new products we have in line and is proud to announce that we have created some very special labels for the new releases. He invites all to come and see them when you pass our farm on the R60, 15 km’s after the turn off to Swellendam!
Enjoy the coming winter in front of our fireplaces with a good glass of wine in our 4-star cottages for only 500 Rand per couple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Bushmanspad team.
